<div class="header" align="center">The Learning Center</div><div class="box">Congratulations on your new job as a writing tutor at the Learning Center!
You'll see a wide variety of students in this job, and maintaining the balance between their agenda, their professor's expectations and your expertise as a tutor is sometimes difficult.
While there's no real substitute for experience, this scenario will simulate some common situations you might encounter, and will give you the chance to make decisions about how you approach them. When you're done, you'll be able to use effective techniques that will help students compose better essays while meeting the professor's expectations.
You won't have a lot of feedback along the way - just as you wouldn't in many situations where you're working with a student. At the end, though, the scenario will give you a chance to reflect on how well you did and provide you with some tips to help you improve.
Are you ready to begin?

You greet Todd with a handshake and introduce yourself, and you both sit down at one of the small tables where you can work comfortably.
"I have a paper for my English class, and I want you to look it over for me, and tell me if it's any good," Todd says, pushing the paper in front of you.

<<if $proofread is true>>Unfortunately, you did. Proofreading Todd's paper was a wrong move. Your job is to be an audience and help students develop as writers. If you proofread for them, they will rely on you and not become as able to find their own errors.<<else>>You didn't do this - a wise decision. Your role is to be an audience, not a proofreading service.<</if>>

<<if $directive lte 3>>You were fairly directive with Todd, either telling him what topics to pursue or giving him too much of your own ideas to use in his paper. In the future, try to ask more questions to help students develop their own ideas, or address concerns that are in line with the assignment.<<else>>You did a pretty nice job staying non-directive with Todd. It can be difficult to avoid directing a student toward what you see is the "right" path, but you did well in asking questions and allowing Todd to choose his own topics and examples, and develop better instincts as a writer.<</if>>

A lot may change in the text of a paper when a student is revising, so addressing grammar, citations, or even a thesis too early can waste a lot of time.<<else>>You addressed the concerns with Todd's paper fairly well from higher concerns (like the topic, or idea development) to lower concerns (like grammar and citations)<</if>>

You feel a little bad that Todd spent this time working on his grammar and mechanics when he may have to make more substantive changes to the paper, but ultimately, talking about the other concerns in the paper will make it stronger and will ultimately help Todd see the importance of having solid ideas that are clearly organized, developed and expressed.

"You should write about how they prepare you for life," you say, happy to contribute to a stronger essay.
"Yeah, like how I learned to skate from playing Tony Hawk, or how GTA V taught me how to avoid the cops."
"Not exactly what I had in mind," you say. "I was thinking more about how videogames help teach you valuable skills - like critical thinking, or how they present simulated danger that you can learn to react to in a safe environment." You go on describing how the idea would develop, coming up with some examples that Todd could use in his essay. Todd diligently takes notes while you talk, writing down every one of the ideas. After a while, he glances at his watch. "I should get going soon so I have time to make these changes."

"Since you already have some ideas about spelunking, you might be able to use some of what you have to talk about videogames."
"What do you mean?" Todd seems a bit confused by the connection between the two.
You take a few minutes to lay out the similarities between how spelunking involves danger and video games have simulated danger in them. "Since you've already written about how danger is important, just change it to discuss how that relates to video games instead of spelunking."
"That's genius!" he says. "I never would have thought of that on my own." He looks at his watch. "I should get going if I want to get these changes done before it's due."

"Besides my mom and my meal card, I would say they're the most important thing in my life." Todd gets a bit of a far-off look.
"Why?" You ask, sitting back in your chair.
"I've learned so much about life. Like in GTA V, how you can avoid the cops, or how to ollie up on a handrail from Tony Hawk."
"O.K. - write those down. Is there anything else you've learned from video games?"
"Oh, like something not illegal or about skating?" He asks.
"Sure, if you think there's something important you've learned."
Todd thinks about his for a second, and you can practically see him going through the catalog of games in his head.
"What about how to solve problems?" he says.
"What do you mean?"
Todd takes a few minutes to talk about how some of his games have helped him get better at thinking through a situation or coming up with alternate approaches to problems. "Do you think that will work?"
"If you're good with it and you feel like you have some good examples - which it sounds like you do - you might have something there."
He looks at his watch. "I should get going if I want to get these changes done before it's due."
